Acro
-
As the world of dance evolves, we see a trend to include acrodance in dance education. Acrodance samples from the classical world of ballet, jazz, contemporary, and lyrical, while also incorporating acrobatics.
The focus is to increase strength, balance and flexibility for the dancer, as well as to develop a repertoire of acrobatics that can be added to other genres. Examples of tricks that dancers may learn are cartwheels, handstands, round offs, and more!
Athleticism and a unique choreography style are what make acrodance stand apart from other traditional dance styles. If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing Cirque du Soleil, you’ve seen some of the world’s best acrodancers.

Dancers will learn an entire language of ballet vocabulary and positions that will serve them in all other forms of dance. Breaking
-
Breakdancing, or breaking, is a form of dance that focuses on creative self-expression, individuality, and the celebration of music. It encourages the manifestation of one’s own personal style and helps develop strong interpersonal skills. The technical use of strength, stamina, and flexibility also make it a great practice of physical education.
Breaking comes from the African American and Puerto Rican communities in the 70’s, and 50 years later it’s popularity continues to grow! Breaking consists of toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. It’s usually accompanied by hip hop, disco, funk, and soul music with drum breaks. It’s high energy, fierce athleticism, and a lot of fun!

Contemporary has become one of the most dominant forms of dance for professional dancers. It is constantly evolving; students will experiment with partnering, floor work, and creative tools, using all the techniques of dance in one class. This ever changing style of dance blends traditional technique from ballet and jazz, with a focus on expressing emotionality through movement and breath. Improvisation, versatility, and floor work are important elements of contemporary dance.
